Jungle Day Treks

Trekking in the Gunung Leuser National Park

The Gunung National Park is one of the richest tropical rainforests in the world. The jungle around Bukit Lawang is a great place to start to explore this amazing jungle. The terrain is mountainous and trekking involves uphill and downhill hikes.

It is reasonably easy to see ex-captive Orangutans lively freely in the local area, along with Thomas-leaf monekys and Macaque monkeys. If you are really lucky, you may catch a glimpe of the fast swinging White-handed Gibbon or a Black Siamang Gibbon.

Our day treks are suitable for anyone healthy and fit. The well walked trails are easy to follow and there are plenty of rest places to stop for a drink or a snack.

Overview

New Jungle Highlights

In 2018, the GLNP authority finished building the new canopy trail in the National park at Bukit Lawang. The canopy trail rises about 50m above the ground, allowing visitors to view the surrounding tree canopy and feel what it’s like to be in the trees.

More recently, a tree house locally known as ‘rumah pohon’ has been built, sitting 20m high in the trees, so visitors can view the surrounding landscape and wildlife.

Before Your Trip

Is this trek suitable for you?

  • A reasonable level of fitness is essential, as the trek involves some up and downhill hikes

  • Suitable for families with small children, solo travellers or

  • The climate is hot and humid most of the year. During the rainy season (October - February) it can be wet in the jungle, meaning there are more leeches and possible more mosquitoes. But by wearing long socks and insect repellant usually keeps these at bay. It can also be slippy in the jungle, but a good pair of trainers or boots should be adequate.

  • There are prickly plants and poisonous stinging plants in the jungle, but by wearing long leaves top and long trousers will help to prevent getting scratched or pricked
